'Examines the iconography of Dürer's images (primarily prints, with some drawings and paintings) of the Virgin and child, in light of the artist's own devotion to his mother, as revealed in his writings, and his religious beliefs. Traces the development of Marian devotion in northern and southern Europe during the early 16th c., and shows that Dürer's depictions of the Madonna and infant strongly reflect the theological position of Martin Luther with respect to the role of the Virgin in Christian faith' (BHA).
