'Studies two portraits of Luther by the Cranach family: one in the 'Last Supper Altarpiece' by Lucas the elder, 1546-47 (Wittenberg, City church), and one in a woodcut by his son Lucas the younger, 'The Difference between the true religion of Christ and the false, idolatrous teaching of the Antichrist', 1546. Focuses on the way the artists have incorporated numerous elements of Luther's teachings into the compositions, calling particular attention to the younger Cranach's use of text and inscriptions to guide the viewer's reading of the print. Concludes that in both cases "images draw attention from the opacity of the word but do not daim to be the Word's true reference; this keeps them from being idolized" (BHA).
