Intellect and intuition in Botticelli's Saint Augustine.
"Recent discussions of Botticelli's S. Augustine (Florence, Ognissanti) have alleged that it illustrates the supernatural visitation of St. Jerome. A text within the painting is here recognized as refering to the conversion of Augustine as described in the Confessions. The program becomes identifiable as the representation of Augustine drawn to God through intuitive faith. The objects depicted in the study refer both to the Confessions and to the Medici, suggesting a subtext of homage to Lorenzo".
