Eating the Book: Reading and the Formation of the Devout Subject in Late Medieval England (Ph.D. North-western University, 2000, 383 pp.).

'In late medieval England, books became an integral part of the devotional practice as lay men and women actively commissioned and consumed religious texts. In this dissertation I argue that many popular 14th and 15th c. Midle English devotional texts seek to construct a reading experience that makes God immediately present for the reader. In ch. I, I argue that John Capgrave's Life of St. Katherine uses the models of monastic reading and the Annunciation to demonstrate how reading could lead to a divine encounter'.
