On reading (into) Botticelli's Saint Augustine.

'Disputes Richard Stapleford's interpretation of Botticelli's fresco of S.Augustine in Ognisanti, Florence (Art bulletin 76 (1994), 69-80 [voir le no.9571] especially his reading of the words on a page behind the saint's head and his deduction of the subject matter of various books from the colors of their bindings. Argues that the presumed patron, Giorgio Antonio Vespucci, may have had a role in the iconography; also endores the general view that the fresco represents Augustine's visionary apprehension of the death of S.Jerome' (BHA).
