The Credo of the Siena Cathedral Sacristy, 1411-1412.

'Using a close reading of documents, the author dates, posits the original configuration and confirms the attribution of the series of panels illustrating the Credo (1411-12, Siena, Museo dell' Opera del Duomo) to Benedetto di Bindo (with gilding by Giusa di Fruosino)... Explains the Sienese preoccupation with Credo iconography through a combination of contemporary papal politics and the heresies of Hus and Wyclif, then sees a reflection of the sacristy series in such later Sienese work as the fresco Triumph of S. Augustine (1410-1413) in the Duomo sacristy and Sassetta's Arte della Lana altarpiece (1423-1426)' (BHA). Among the most notable examples of the Credo, besides the Duomo Sacristy series was a cycle by Ambrogio Lorenzetti in the chapter house of S. Agostino (now lost). Recent scholarship indicates that the composition specifically represents the Triumph of St. Augustine, flanked by the personifications of Philosophy and Theology , and that it derives closely from a fresco of the same subject in the choir of S. Agostino in Montalcino, painted by Bartolo di Fredi in the later 1380s.
