"The mosaic decoration of the Cappella Chigi cupola exhibits anomalies contradicting the general view of it as a Renaissance depiction of the dome of heaven. Analysis of these irregularities makes it possible to determine what R. planned for the rest of the chapel, the practical problems of transforming an intellectual structure into a visual image, and how these difficulties led to transformations of form and meaning which obscured R's original intentions" (RILA).
